Albright Edges Elizabethtown in Overtime, 81-73
READING , Pa. --- Elizabethtown College dropped an 81-73 overtime heartbreaker on the road against Commonwealth Conference rival Albright College Saturday night. The Blue Jays drop to 6-12 overall and 1-7 in the Commonwealth with the loss, their seventh in a row. Albright improved to 7-11 overall and 2-6 in the conference with the win.
Elizabethtown took a 33-29 lead into halftime, and Albright clung to a slim lead for much of the second half. The host Lions led 65-63 with 1:20 to go in regulation time, and Elizabethtown’s Brian Goodwin (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 left on the clock to tie the game 65-65. Neither team was able to score for the rest of the second half, and the game went into overtime.
Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) hit a jumper seven seconds into overtime to give the Blue Jays their first lead of the extra five minutes, 67-65. Albright’s Albert Medoro made a three-pointer with 3:54 left in OT to give the Lions a 68-67 lead. Kris Kieres (Barnesville, PA/Mahanoy Area) scored on a jumper with 3:48 left to put Elizabethtown ahead 69-68, and Albright’s Phil Hall made a three-pointer with 3:24 left to put the Lions ahead to stay, 71-69. Albright out-scored Elizabethtown 10-4 the rest of the way.
Kieres led Elizabethtown in scoring with 20 points from off the bench as he went 7-for-15 from the field, 5-for-10 from three-point range and 1-for-2 from the free throw line. Ledyard added 16 points for Elizabethtown on 8-for-14 shooting from the field, and Michael Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) added 10 points and led all players in steals with six.
Andre Murphy led Albright in scoring with 19 points, while Greg Conroy had 14 points and Tom Murphy added 11. Albright’s top rebounder was Medoro with 10, and he scored nine points.
Albright out-rebounded Elizabethtown 45-29. Albright also committed 26 turnovers, while Elizabethtown turned the ball over 17 times.
Elizabethtown will return to action on the road against Susquehanna University in an 8:00 p.m. conference road game Wednesday, January 31.
