ETOWN MAKES SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO THE ROAD WITH 84-65 WIN AT JUNIATA; WEBER LEADS JAYS WITH 23
HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- Adam Weber (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain) scored a game-high 23 points as Elizabethtown, playing on the road for the first time in seven games, defeated Juniata, 84-65, in MAC Commonwealth League action on Tuesday. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the league.
Mark Sweet (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) scored 13 points and added 14 rebounds as Etown continued its strongest start since opening the 1992-93 season with a 12-3 mark. A.J. Beamer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) collected 12 points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists on the night while Ross Unruh (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) tossed in nine points on three three-pointers.
Tim Lonesky led three Juniata players in double figures with 15 points. Nathan Hager scored 14 points and Scott Leonard added 12 points for the Eagles, who fell to 2-14 overall and 0-6 in the league.
Juniata trailed 40-38 at halftime and by only five points with 7:56 left in the game after a jumper by Leonard cut the Etown advantage to 63-58. The Blue Jays, however, reeled off 21 of the game's final 28 points to cruise to the win.
Matt Nikoloff (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) started the run with a pair of free throws and Unruh followed with a three-pointer to give the Jays a 68-58 edge with 7:13 remaining. After Hager sank one of two free throws, Weber and Brian Schmoyer (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) connected on back-to-back treys to push the Etown lead to 74-61.
Hager tossed in two more free throws to pull the Eagles within 11, but Beamer scored four straight points, Weber hit a free throw and Nikoloff converted a layup to give the Blue Jays an 81-63 with 56 seconds remaining.
Etown, which won only four road games in 1997-98, is already 5-0 away from Thompson Gym this season. The Blue Jays play away in six of their next eight games.
Etown returns to action on Saturday, January
23 at Moravian College. Game time is 8 p.m.
