ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL
WILKES USES LATE RUN TO SUBDUE ETOWN, 69-56, IN MAC SEMIFINALS; BLUE JAYS END SEASON WITH 16-10 RECORD
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Chad Fabian scored 19 points and Dave Jannuzzi added 17 points as 13th-ranked Wilkes (23-3) used a late run to defeat Elizabethtown, 69-56, in Middle Atlantic Conference semifinal action on Thursday. With the loss, the Blue Jays wrapped up their season with a 16-10 record.
A.J. Beamer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) led the Etown effort with 11 points and four rebounds while Adam Weber (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain) and Bob Porambo (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) added ten points apiece.
Scott Cleveland added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Colonels, who outrebounded Etown by a 47-23 margin on the night.
Wilkes opened up a 40-33 advantage in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Blue Jays stormed back with an 11-0 run, highlighted by five points from Beamer, that gave Etown a 44-40 lead with 11:28 remaining.
After the Colonels pulled even on a basket and two free throws by Jannuzzi, the team's went back-and-forth until the Blue Jays took their final lead of the game at 49-48 on a basket by Porambo with 8:53 left.
Kevin Walsh put Wilkes up for good with a bucket on his team's next possession and the Colonels reeled off eight straight points and 19 of the game's final 26 to seize control and earn the victory.
Kevin Cristofoletti (Kendall Park, NJ/Notre Dame) scored seven points for Etown and added three assists. The Blue Jays shot 24-for-57 (42.1 percent) from the field for the game while Wilkes shot 25-for-57 (43.9) from the floor, including a 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) performance from three-point land.
Wilkes will face Lebanon Valley in the MAC
championship game on Saturday, February 27 in Annville. Game time
is 2 p.m. The Blue Jays, who were picked to finish seventh in the
MAC Commonwealth League at the start of the year, saw their season end
in the MAC semifinals for the second time in the last three years.
