TIRNEY, HELSEL HELP ETOWN OPEN COMMONWEALTH SLATE WITH 2-0 WIN OVER WIDENERELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Drew Tirney and Chris Helsel connected for their first goals of the season to lead Elizabethtown past Widener, 2-0, in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League opener for both squads. With the victory, the Blue Jays won their third consecutive game and improved to 4-3 on the season. Etown outshot the Pioneers 22-4 on the afternoon with a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks. Tirney put the Blue Jays on the board in the 30th minute, blasting a low shot past Widener goalie Mark McManus for the first goal of his collegiate career. Chas Vennie picked up an assist on the goal for his first point since the 1996 season. Helsel, who led the Jays with ten goals in 1997, added late insurance with a goal in the 88th minute off a perfect feed from Bryan Hoy. Nicklas Hostetter played the first 45 minutes in the nets for Etown to pick up the first victory of his collegiate career. Joe Franc led the Blue Jay offense with seven shots, but saw his team-high, point-scoring streak snapped at five games. Etown returns to action on Tuesday, September
22 at Lebanon Valley College. Game time is 4 p.m.
