Elizabethtown Defeats Delaware Valley 7-1
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Nine games into the 2004 season, Elizabethtown College's men's soccer team had its first game where it scored more than one goal. Though the game was far from pretty, with nine cards drawn over the course of the first 64 minutes, Etown's 7-1 home blowout of Delaware Valley College improves the Blue Jays to 4-2-3 overall, while Delaware Valley drops to 0-10-1.
Etown scored its first four goals in the first 16 minutes of the game. Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont) scored the first two goals off assists from Andrew Kummerer (Glenmoore, PA/Coatesville) and Chris Boushell (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg), respectively, at 3:08 and 12:13. At 13:26, Kummerer was fouled to set up a kick by Daniel Gring (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) that sailed over the Delaware Valley wall and into the goal. J.T. Liss (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) scored off assists by Zach Eddinger (Middletown, CT/Middletown) and Healy at 15:24 to give Etown a 4-0 lead.
Delaware Valley struck back with a Ryan Ponnwitz goal at 29:29 to cut the margin to 4-1, and that is where the score stayed as the first half expired. By the end of the first half, Delaware Valley had racked up three yellow cards.
Delaware Valley was forced to play down a man when Gospel Nwogwugwu drew a red card at 54:53, and Kummerer scored for Etown off a Healy assist at 60:22. Delaware Valley found itself understaffed by two on the field at 63:26 when Nick D'Amato drew his second yellow card of the game. The Aggies were only down by two men on the field for a few seconds, as Liss drew his second yellow card for Etown just 32 seconds later.
A goal by Bryan Noll (Fleetwood, PA/Oley Valley) off an assist by Peter Moore (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) at 82:13 gave Etown a 6-1 lead, and Moore added a goal of his own at 85:57 to make the score 7-1.
Chris Zirpoli made 11 saves for Delaware Valley, and Etown goaltender Edwin Tichenor (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) made two saves for the Blue Jays in 68 minutes of work.
Etown will return to action on the road Saturday, October 2 against Commonwealth Conference rival Widener University at 3:00 p.m.
