Elizabethtown Upsets 6th-Ranked Messiah 1-0 in Double Overtime; Blue Jays Win First Conference Title, Clinch First NCAA Bid, Since 1999
GRANTHAM, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College won its first conference title and clinched its first NCAA Division III Tournament bid since 1999 with a 1-0 double overtime upset road win over nationally sixth-ranked Messiah College in the Commonwealth Conference championship game Saturday night. The Blue Jays improve to 14-3-3 overall with the win, while Messiah drops to 18-2 overall with the loss.
Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont) scored the golden goal for Etown with 6:13 left on the clock in the second overtime period off a pass by Andrew Kummerer (Glenmoore, PA/Coatesville).
Messiah out-shot Etown 17-5 over the course of the game but could not get anything past Etown goaltender Edwin Tichenor (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), who made five saves in the game.
With the win, Elizabethtown clinches the Commonwealth Conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament, while Messiah will have to wait to see if it gets one of just three at-large bids available nationwide. The NCAA Division III Tournament field for 2004 is scheduled to be announced Sunday, November 7. 12 first round games will be played Wednesday, November 10, and 16 second round games will be played Saturday, November 13.
