Elizabethtown and Hobart Fight to 0-0 Tie in NCAA Tournament First Round; Hobart Advances to Second Round on Penalty Kick Shootout GENEVA , N.Y. --- The Elizabethtown College men’s soccer team ended its 2006 season with an 11-5-3 overall record Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays battled host Hobart College to a 0-0 tie through two overtimes in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament, but Hobart advanced to the second round by out-scoring Elizabethtown 5-3 in the penalty kick shootout. The game is officially scored as a 0-0 tie, and Hobart, which is now 12-3-3 overall, will travel to York College (Pa.) to take on the host Spartans in the second round of the NCAA tournament Saturday, November 11. Elizabethtown held an 18-16 advantage in shots, a 5-3 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks over the course of the game. Hobart out-shot Etown 9-5 in the first half, but Etown out-shot Hobart 9-3 in the second half. The teams each had two shots in each of the overtime periods. Three of Elizabethtown’s seven corner kicks came during the second ten-minute overtime period. During the two regulation periods and the two overtime periods, Elizabethtown goalie A.J. Fleisher (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown Area) made three saves, and Hobart goaltender Pete Van Dellon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) made four saves. After 110 minutes went by with no scoring, the shootout to determine the advancing team began. Tyler Webster (Acton, MA/Acton Boxboro) made the first PK for Hobart, and Bryan Holt (Hershey, PA/Lower Dauphin) followed with a good PK for Etown. Jamie Smith (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) made the next PK for Hobart, and Owen Friedrich (Westmont, NJ/Haddown Twp.) made the next PK for Etown. Hobart’s Matt Geswell (Patterson, NY/Central) converted the next penalty kick for Hobart, and the following Elizabethtown shot by Rick Winstanley (Manchester, England/St. Gabirel’s) was blocked by Van Dellon to give Hobart a 3-2 lead. Sam Wisner (Wayland, MA/Wayland) made the next penalty kick for Hobart, and James Runyan (Hoptacong, NJ/Hoptacong) converted the next Etown PK. At that point, Hobart held a 4-3 lead and needed to make its final penalty kick to clinch advancement to the next round of the NCAA tournament.
