Elizabethtown Rallies to Edge 16th-Ranked Lycoming 14-13 in Key MAC Game
ELIZABETHTOWN , Pa. --- With the winning goal scored with just 21 seconds on the clock, Elizabethtown capped a rally to defeat nationally 16th-ranked Lycoming College 14-13 at home Tuesday. The game pitted the only two remaining teams with undefeated records in the Middle Atlantic Conference against one another, and the win improved Elizabethtown to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the MAC. Lycoming suffered its first loss of the year and dropped to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Etown’s Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) scored the game’s opening goal for Elizabethtown just 24 seconds after the opening whistle. Etown held a 2-1 lead with 22:42 on the clock in the first half when Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) scored the Blue Jays’ second goal. Lycoming then rattled off three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead before Etown’s Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) struck on an eight-meter shot with 15:58 on the clock. Etown tied the game 4-4 35 seconds later when Foley scored on another 8m shot. Lycoming then went on a 5-0 run over the next five and a half minutes to take a 9-4 lead. Kreis scored Etown’s final goal of the first half with 9:47 remaining, and Lycoming scored once more in the first half with 2:47 on the clock to take a 10-5 lead into halftime.
When Lycoming’s Megan Wallenhorst (Rochester, NY/Irondequiot) scored off a Justine Titko (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) assist 1:17 into the second half to give the visiting Warriors an 11-5 lead, things looked grim for Elizabethtown. The Blue Jays, however, climbed back into the game by scoring four unanswered goals in the next seven minutes. Caprinolo scored at 27:42, followed by a Kreis goal off an Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/homeschooled) assist at 27:01 to cut the gap to 11-7. Kreis scored again on an 8m shot at 22:23, and Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) followed with a goal at 21:31 off a Kelsea Kozak (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) assist to make the score 11-9.
There was no further scoring until 14:33 left in the game, when Lycoming’s Wallenhorst scored again off a Titko assist to send the Warriors ahead 12-9. Lycoming went up 13-9 with 8:34 left when Crystal Cody (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) scored unassisted.
Elizabethtown then rattled off the final five goals unanswered to swipe the victory from the Warriors’ clutches. Foley scored on an 8m shot with 8:08 left, and Byrnes was given an 8m attempt at 6:03. Instead of shooting, Byrnes tossed the ball to Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield), who streaked in from the left side of the goal, shot, and scored with 6:01 on the clock to make the score 13-11. Caprinolo scored off a Foley assist for Etown with 4:35 in the game to make the score 13-12. With 3:54 left in the game, Foley scored on an 8m shot to tie things up 13-13. The game-winner came with 21 seconds left to play, as Kreis scored on an 8m attempt. Lycoming got the following draw control and brought the ball downfield, but the Warriors were unable to score in their last time with the ball.
Elizabethtown out-shot Lycoming 40-28 for the game, including 20-11 in the second half. The Blue Jays also held a 22-15 advantage in ground balls and a 15-14 edge in draw controls. The Blue Jays converted seven of 12 eight-meter shots, while Lycoming was just 1-for-3 in 8m shot attempts. Lycoming also turned the ball over 24 times, against 20 turnovers for Elizabethtown.
Kreis led Elizabethtown in scoring with five goals, and she led the team in draw controls with six. She also tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with three. Foley scored four times and had one assist for Etown, and she had four draw controls. Caprinolo scored three goals for Etown, and Byrnes added one goal, one assist and four ground balls. Sangrey scored one time for Etown, and Ford had one assist and a team-leading total of three caused turnovers, along with three ground balls. Kozak had one assist for the Blue Jays. Goaltender Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) made 10 saves, had two ground balls, and had one caused turnover for Etown.
Wallenhorst led Lycoming in scoring with three goals, and she led the team in draw controls with three. Megan McIntyre (Baltimore, MD/Mercy) scored twice and had four assists for the Warriors, and Titko scored two goals, had two assists, two caused turnovers, and led Lycoming in ground balls with four. Cody and Sarah Wingerden (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) each scored a pair of goals for Lycoming, as did Christi Karr (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy Acad.). Heather Suit (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) made two assists for the Warriors. Lycoming goalie Kristina Peacock (Webster, NY/Webster-Thomas) made 16 saves, had two caused turnovers and one ground ball.
Elizabethtown will next face nationally fifth-ranked The College of New Jersey in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference road game Thursday, April 12.
