Stevens Edges Elizabethtown 18-16

HOBOKEN, N.J --- Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) narrowly defeated Elizabethtown College 18-16 at Stevens Friday night as the visiting Blue Jays dropped to 1-2 in dual matches, while Stevens improved to 2-0.

Junior Peter Achilles (Geneva, NY/Geneva) began the match with a 13-5 major decision win at 125 pounds for Elizabethtown. However, Stevens won the next three matches to take a 10-4 lead. At 157 pounds, Elizabethtown struck back as Jereme Heisey (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won an 8-4 decision to cut the host Ducks’ lead to 10-7. A Stevens win on a technical fall at 165 pounds gave the Ducks a 15-7 lead.

Elizabethtown cut the gap to 15-10 at 174 pounds as Brett Epps (Perth Amboy, NJ/Rutgers Prep.) won a 7-1 decision for the Blue Jays. Stevens went up 18-10 with a 4-3 decision at 184 pounds.

Elizabethtown battled back, winning the final two bouts but coming up short as the Blue Jays final two victories came on regular decisions. Deron Sharp (Millville, NJ/Millville) won 5-2 at 197 pounds for the Blue Jays, and Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing Area) claimed a 7-3 decision at heavyweight for Etown.

Elizabethtown will return to action Wednesday, January 10 in a triangular match at Muhlenberg College with New York University beginning at noon.
