ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- With a 2-0 home victory over Lebanon Valley in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals Wednesday, Elizabethtown advances to the conference championship game and improves its record to 13-6-1. Lebanon Valley is eliminated from the conference tournament by the loss and falls to 12-4-1 overall.
Elizabethtown and Lebanon Valley battled through a scoreless first half wherein each team had four shots. The stalemate was broken when Etown's Rachel Chieppa (Cheswick, PA/Springdale) scored on a long shot 6:54 into the second half. Rebecca Young (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) made the score 2-0 in Etown's favor with 5:08 remaining in the game. She hit the back of the net with a steep-angled shot on a pass from Nicole Hundley (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township). Etown outshot Lebanon Valley 8-1 in the second half.
Etown goaltender Jackie Shoustal (Reading, PA/Exeter Township), in only the second start of her collegiate career, made three saves to preserve the Blue Jays' shutout, the first complete-game whitewash of her career. Lebanon Valley's Suzanne Becker (Bowie, MD/Seton Keough) made three saves.
Elizabethtown will next host the Commonwealth Conference championship game Saturday, October 28. Game time is 1:00 p.m., and the Blue Jays will face Messiah, which defeated Moravian 2-1 in the other conference semifinal game Wednesday at Moravian.
