ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER Elizabethtown Defeats Ursinus 1-0 in 2006 Opener HERSHEY, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College won its 2006 season opener Sunday afternoon, defeating Ursinus College 1-0 on the only day of Etown’s weather-truncated Blue Jay Classic. In the other game Sunday, nationally second-ranked College of New Jersey rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Christopher Newport University 2-1. Both of the games were held at Hersheypark Stadium instead of at Elizabethtown College due to wet field conditions from the remnants of tropical storm Ernesto. Saturday’s games were completely washed out. Etown and Ursinus were scoreless until 71:50, when Blue Jay defender Emily Gunter (Hockessin, DE/A.I. DuPont) scored during a scrum in front of the Ursinus net in the aftermath of an Etown corner kick. Despite the score, Ursinus held a 12-8 advantage in shots over Elizabethtown. Etown goalie Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) made five saves. Late in the first half, Ursinus had one of its best scoring chances after a player got around Freeland and took a shot on goal. Elizabethtown defender Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) managed the boot the ball away and prevent an Ursinus goal. In the other game, Hillary Carney of Christopher Newport gave the captains a 1-0 lead at 37:18. The College of New Jersey’s Jamie Kunkel tied the game with a goal at 54:09. At 73:37, Allie Schilling scored off a Kristen Cubicciotti assist to give the Lions the win. Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, September 9 at Stevens Institute of Technology in a 12:00 p.m. game. Ursinus College (0-1) vs. Elizabethtown Coll.
