ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown Wins Three Titles, Earns Four Runner-Up Finishes, at MASCAC Individual Singles and Doubles Championships; Stacy Shapiro Passes 100 Career Win Mark; Heather Lander Breaks Etown Doubles Career Win Record BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College entries took home three titles and had four runner-up finishes out of nine flights at the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Individual Singles and Doubles Championships, held at Lehigh University Saturday & Sunday. The MASCAC comprises all the schools that compete in the Commonwealth Conference, as well as all the schools that compete in the Freedom Conference. Winning MASCAC championships for the Blue Jays were senior Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) at number five singles, senior Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and junior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) at number one doubles, and first-year student Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and sophomore Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) at number two doubles. Finishing as MASCAC runners-up were Shapiro at number one singles, Smith at number two singles, Swarr at number three singles, and Lander and first-year student Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) at number three doubles. Additionally, Elizabethtown seniors Lander and Shapiro reached some milestone victories in their careers. Shaprio became only the third player in Elizabethtown history to reach the 100 career combined win plateau, and she earned her 50th career singles and 50th career doubles wins over the course of the weekend. Lander broke the Elizabethtown career doubles win record of 57 during the weekend; she now has 60 career doubles wins. At fifth singles, Lander won the MASCAC title for the third year in a row. She entered the tournament seeded second after playing most of the fall 2006 season at sixth singles, and she upset top-seeded Jenell Yelito of Moravian College 6-0, 6-3 in the championship match to claim the title again. She went 3-0 in singles for the weekend. At first doubles, Shapiro and Smith entered the tournament seeded first and won all three of their matches to claim the championship. The pair went 3-0 for the weekend. At second doubles, second-seeded Swarr and Yu pulled off an 8-6 upset of top-seeded Brittany Popaca and MaryKate Kelly of Moravian in the championship match to win the title. The pair went 3-0 for the weekend. At first singles, second-seeded Shapiro won her first two matches before falling to third-seeded Xiaoqiao Zhang of Wilkes University 3-6, 6-1, (10-8) in the championship match to finish as the runner-up. At second singles, unseeded Smith won her first three matches, including a pair of upsets of seeded opponents, beating fourth-seeded Sadie Sumner of Messiah College 6-0, 6-2, and eliminating top-seeded Alison McDonald of Wilkes 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. She fell to third-seeded Sarah Grodzinski of Lebanon Valley College 6-0, 6-2 in the championship to finish as the runner-up. At third singles, second-seeded Swarr won her first two matches before falling to top-seeded Brittany Popaca of Moravian in a close 7-6(2), 0-6, (10-2) championship match to finish as the runner-up. At third doubles, the unseeded pair of Lander and Russell won its first three matches in what turned out to be a topsy-turvy bracket. They upset the third-seeded pair from King’s College (Pa.) in an 8-0 shutout in the second round, and they won an 8-2 upset over the top-seeded pair from Moravian in the semifinals. In the championship match, they fell 8-2 to another unseeded pair from Lebanon Valley to finish as runners-up. At number four singles and number six singles, Yu and Russell, respectively, each went 1-1 in their brackets. at Bethlehem, Pa. |
