Alice Yu Wins MASCAC Singles Title as Elizabethtown Competes at Conference Individual Championships

LANDISVILLE, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team competed at the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Individual Championships at Hempfield Sports Complex over the weekend, and claimed one champion and two runners-up among the six singles and three doubles flights at the tournament.

Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) claimed her first MASCAC individual championship by winning flight three singles, while senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) was runner-up at flight two singles and the team of sophomores Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) finished second at flight two doubles.

Yu, who earned a MASCAC doubles title last season while teamed with Swarr, downed Ariane Lewis of Manhattanville 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Kristin Wilt of Wilkes 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals before defeating Kate Steiner of DeSales 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match.

Smith downed Rebecca Reynolds of Lycoming 6-0, 6-0 in quarterfinal action and defeated Leslie Sabas of Lebanon Valley 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals before falling to Xiaoqiao Zhang of Wilkes 6-4, 3-6, (10-2) in the finals to finish as runner-up for the second consecutive year.

In other singles action, Swarr competed at first singles and fell 7-6, 6-2 to Sarah Grodzinski of Lebanon Valley in a quarterfinal match, Russell played at fourth singles and was defeated by Charissa Nordall of Lebanon Valley 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, and sophomore Kelly Wall (Washington, PA/Washington) was entered at sixth singles and lost 6-3, 6-1 to Nickie Brackbill of DeSales in quarterfinal play.

In doubles, Swarr and Russell posted an 8-1 victory over Stacy Bampton and Marissa Cooperman of Albright in quarterfinal play and downed Liz Guidon and Jess Smith of DeSales 9-7 in the semifinals before suffering a heartbreaking 9-8 loss (9-7 tiebreaker) to Wilt and Victoria Bybel of Wilkes in the championship match.

Yu and Smith played at first doubles and were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Reynolds and Amiee Snyder of Lycoming by a 9-7 score.
